How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis (COA)
The research-peptide market is unregulated — so an independent, batch-specific lab report is the single best way to judge quality. Here's how to read one.
What a COA is
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a lab report documenting the identity and purity of a specific batch of material. For research peptides it typically reports the measured peptide content and purity percentage, tied to a unique batch (lot) number. Because the market has no mandatory quality standard, a genuine COA is the most reliable quality signal available to a researcher.
Why third-party testing matters
An "in-house" certificate from the seller is easy to fabricate. An independent, third-party report — from a recognised analytical lab such as Janoshik — is far harder to fake and is what reputable suppliers publish. If a supplier only offers a self-issued certificate, or none at all, treat that as a quality red flag.
What to look for, line by line
- Sample name & stated amount — does it match the product and vial (e.g. "BPC-157 10mg")?
- Batch / lot number — there must be one, and it should match the number printed on the vial. This is the link between the paper and the product in your hand.
- Purity (%) — the headline figure. Higher is better; quality research material is typically well above 98%.
- Measured content — the actual quantity detected, which should be close to the stated amount.
- Testing laboratory — a named, independent lab (e.g. Janoshik), not just the seller.
- Date & task/report number — recent, with a reference you can verify.
- A verification link or QR code — many independent labs let you confirm the report is genuine on their own site.
How to verify it matches your vial
The most important check is simple: does the batch number on the COA match the batch number on the vial? A real report is for one specific batch. A generic certificate with no batch number — or a number that doesn't match — tells you nothing about the material you actually received.
Red flags
- No COA available, or "available on request" but never provided.
- A generic certificate with no batch number.
- Self-issued only — no independent testing lab named.
- Purity figures that look too clean (e.g. a flat "100%") with no supporting method.
